Description :

With the advent of Globalisation, English has gained significance in every important realm –be it communication, trade or commerce. Hence, proficiency in this language has become the need of the hour. This entails that the teachers of English at the elementary level must be proficient in the language to be able to create a learning-rich environment in the classroom. Theyhave to encourage and enable the learners to master the four basic skills, namely listening, speaking, reading and writing. Linguistically, English for an average child in India is the secondlanguage. However, in the lay man’s terms, it is the third language for an average child in Bihar where the first language, usually, is Bhojpuri, Maithili, Bangla, Magahi, Angika or Bajjika and Hindi or Urdu the second language. The knowledge of Hindi, Urdu, Bhojpuri, Maithili, Bangla,Magahi, Angika or Bajjika can be exploited as a rich resource for the teaching -learning of English. The present curriculum seeks to address these issues related to English language teaching in India, especially Bihar. Here, the mother tongue interference does pose certain problems with regards to pronunciation and the uses of certain structures; hence, attempts have to be made to familiarise the learners with English sounds and structures. It is very difficult to learn a language unless one has proper exposure to it. Language is primarily acquired through listening and the suitable response to what we listen to is made through speaking. That is why at the early stage of learning, the interaction in terms of communication is confined to listening and speaking. The skills of reading and writing follow subsequently when the child begins to receive formal education. So the purpose of this course is to enable the trainees to improve their proficiency in English and equip them with the pedagogical insights essentially needed to transact the content effectively in the classroom. Since the lack of competency in English often undermines the performance of a teacher in the classroom, he/she needs to be proficient in the language. A teacher could be at home to use different communicative strategies to meet his/her goal, if he/she finds himself/herself capable in using the language.
